Mario and Donkey Kong both debuted in the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong is often perceived as coming first because the game was named after him and marketed around him, not because he appeared earlier. Mario, then known as Jumpman, was the player character. After being officially named Mario in 1983 and becoming the star of Super Mario Bros. in 1985, he became Nintendo's flagship character.
