Municipal history: https://municipalidaddepanajachel.gob.gt/index.php/2024/08/14/historia-de-panajachel/ LAKE ATITLÁN Lake Atitlán is a large volcanic lake in the Guatemalan Highlands. Elevation: Approximately 1,562–1,564 meters above sea level. Surface area: Approximately 126–130 km². Maximum depth: Approximately 327–340+ meters, depending on the survey and measurement used. Shoreline: Approximately 100 km. Length: Approximately 18 km. Lake type: Volcanic caldera lake. Lake Atitlán is generally regarded as the deepest lake in Central America. The lake occupies a large volcanic depression created by major volcanic activity. The modern Atitlán volcanic system is associated with a very large eruption approximately 84,000–85,000 years ago. Volcán Atitlán Elevation: 3,537 meters (11,604 feet). This is the highest of the three volcanoes and the most recently active. The volcano has experienced historical eruptions, with the most recent known eruption occurring in 1853. NASA: https://science.nasa.gov/earth/earth-observatory/volcanic-vistas-of-the-guatemala-highlands-153749/ 2. Volcán Tolimán Elevation: Approximately 3,158 meters (10,361 feet). Tolimán is considered dormant. It forms part of the volcanic landscape surrounding the southern portion of Lake Atitlán. NASA: https://science.nasa.gov/earth/earth-observatory/volcanic-vistas-of-the-guatemala-highlands-153749/ 3. Volcán San Pedro Elevation: Approximately 3,020 meters (9,908 feet). San Pedro is a stratovolcano on the southwestern side of the lake. Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program: https://volcano.si.edu/volcano.cfm?vn=342810 CONAP information: https://turismo-sigap.conap.gob.gt/en/rutas-turisticas/ruta-de-volcanes-paisaje-y-cultura-altiplano/cuenca-del-lago-de-atitlan-volcan-san-pedro/ THE VOLCANIC LANDSCAPE The three volcanoes were constructed within the larger Atitlán volcanic depression after the major caldera-forming event. The result is an unusual geographic structure: High Guatemalan plateau ↓ Ancient volcanic caldera ↓ Lake Atitlán ↓ Three major volcanic cones surrounding the lake This is why the landscape around Panajachel is extremely steep in places and why the lake is unusually deep. USGS: https://www.usgs.gov/publications/recent-geologic-history-lake-atitlan-a-caldera-lake-western-guatemala CLIMATE AND ELEVATION Panajachel sits at approximately 1,573 meters elevation. The lake itself is at approximately 1,562 meters. The surrounding volcanoes rise to more than 3,500 meters. This creates significant elevation differences over a relatively small geographic area. The lake and surrounding mountains also create localized weather patterns. One of the best-known is Xocomil, a strong wind that can develop over Lake Atitlán, particularly when atmospheric conditions produce strong circulation between the surrounding highlands and warmer lowlands. INGUAT: https://inguat.gob.gt/es/descargas-inguat-guatemala/46-guias-turisticas.html SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES Major communities around Lake Atitlán include: Panajachel Santa Catarina Palopó San Antonio Palopó San Lucas Tolimán Santiago Atitlán San Pedro La Laguna San Juan La Laguna San Pablo La Laguna San Marcos La Laguna Santa Cruz La Laguna Santa Clara La Laguna The basin is therefore not an isolated tourist area. It is a densely inhabited cultural and economic region. MAYA DEMOGRAPHICS The Lake Atitlán region contains several major Maya cultural and linguistic populations. Panajachel is predominantly associated with the Kaqchikel Maya. Other parts of the Lake Atitlán basin have substantial Kaqchikel, Tz'utujil and K'iche' populations. This produces a geographically concentrated area containing several distinct Maya cultural communities. Guatemala environmental authority: https://www.amsclae.gob.gt/2013/09/03/lago-de-atitlan/ GDP There is an important limitation concerning GDP. Guatemala does not publish a conventional official GDP figure specifically for the municipality of Panajachel. The appropriate official economic measurement is GDP for Sololá Department. Banco de Guatemala reported the following nominal departmental GDP: 2020: Q7.0205 billion 2021: Q7.6263 billion 2022: Q7.8858 billion 2023: Q8.2988 billion 2024: Q8.6923 billion Therefore, Sololá Department's nominal GDP was approximately Q8.69 billion in 2024. This should NOT be described as Panajachel's GDP. Panajachel is only one municipality within the department. Panajachel functions as a major gateway to Lake Atitlán. Its economy is strongly associated with: Tourism Hotels Restaurants Retail Handicrafts Transportation Boat transportation Tourism services Real estate Construction Small businesses Calle Santander is one of the most important commercial and tourism corridors in the town. Municipal government: https://municipalidaddepanajachel.gob.gt/ REGIONAL POPULATION The population of the Lake Atitlán watershed is much larger than Panajachel's population. Studies of the Lake Atitlán watershed have estimated a population of more than 380,000 people within the broader basin and surrounding communities. This means Panajachel's local population of approximately 15,000 represents only a small portion of the population economically and geographically connected to Lake Atitlán.
