Top-Spec Red Bull Air Race–Class Airplane
Edge 540 V3 Corvus Racer 540 MXS-R class
These are the real “top of the class” machines used in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship era. All share the same tightly regulated Lycoming AEIO-540 family engine and minimum post-race weight rules (~698 kg), so the differences come from airframe stiffness, aerodynamics, and pilot setup. Below is the complete top-spec configuration.
Airframe & Dimensions
- Type
- Single-seat, low-wing, fully aerobatic monoplane (symmetric airfoil)
- Length
- 6.3–6.57 m
- Wingspan
- 7.32–7.44 m (under the 7.6 m series limit)
- Height
- ~2.5–2.8 m
- Wing area
- ~9.1–10 m²
- Empty weight
- ~524–571 kg
- Race minimum weight
- 698 kg (pilot + fuel included)
- Construction
- Carbon-fibre wings and fairings + chrome-moly steel-tube fuselage (Edge / Corvus) or full carbon-fibre monocoque (MXS-R)
- Propeller
- 3-blade constant-speed (Hartzell or MTV)
Powerplant & Performance
Absolute top figures from race data.
- Engine
- Lycoming AEIO-540 / Thunderbolt AEIO-540-EXP (air-cooled, horizontally opposed 6-cylinder, ~8.9 L, fuel-injected, fully aerobatic oil/fuel systems)
- Power
- 320–340+ hp at 2,700–2,950 rpm (strictly limited and monitored)
- Top speed
- 425–444 km/h (230–240 kt)
- Stall speed
- ~55–65 kt
- Roll rate
- 420–440 °/sec
- Climb rate
- 3,700–4,300 ft/min
- G limits (airframe)
- +12 / −10 to +14 / −14
- G limits (race)
- Typically +10 G sustained, with telemetry monitoring
- Fuel
- ~50–70 L usable for a race heat (100LL avgas)
Race Systems
- Real-time telemetry (accelerometer + speed + timing)
- Minimum race weight enforced at finish
- Start-gate speed limit: ≤200 kt (370 km/h)
- Highly optimized for knife-edge, high-G vertical turns, and sub-2-second gate-to-gate transitions
Race Course Design — “Volcano Water Cross”
15-route master course Dubai-referenced kit 3 volcano routes Water slide section
Using the classic Dubai / Abu Dhabi floating water tracks as the base layout (long water approaches, city backdrop, tight pylons over water), here is a full top-level track incorporating every requested element.
Track Concept: “Volcano Water Cross” (15-Route Master Course)
- Primary surface: Open water with floating inflatable pylons
- Pylon height: 25 m — Red Bull-spec rip-stop nylon that bursts on contact
- Reference kit: Dubai-style long water corridor + urban skyline sight lines, expanded
Key Features Requested
1 · Water Slide Section
A long, descending water-side run with a series of low single gates that force a high-speed “slide” along the surface (pilots stay as low as legal ~15 m minimum between gates).
Visual reference: continuous blue water surface with slight artificial wave markers.
2 · Three Volcano Routes
Three alternative high-G climbing/descending legs marked by specially coloured “volcano” double gates (dark red/black pylons with ash-grey bands).
Each volcano route is a short, steep vertical turn sequence that can be chosen or forced depending on wind/tide. They add elevation change and higher G loading than a flat water track.
3 · Cross on 15 Different Routes
Master layout contains 15 distinct gate sequences / path options — combinations of double gates, single turn gates, chicanes, and the three volcano legs.
- Assignable route combinations for qualifying vs. final
- Multi-lap with route switches
- Total flying distance per full run: 5–7 km
- Lap times: 55–75 second window
4 · Long Beach Note
Long Beach (historical Red Bull Air Race venue) ranked 3rd in the “needed specs” comparison for this design:
- Strong urban / water contrast ✓
- Technical chicanes ✓
- Lacked pure open-water length of Dubai ✗
- Lacked elevation variety of Dubai ✗
Dubai therefore remains the primary kit reference for pylon spacing, water surface handling, and spectator sight lines.
Typical Gate Set for This Track
- Start / Finish double gate — level wings, ≤200 kt
- Multiple double gates — level
- Single turn gates — knife-edge or 90° bank
- Tight chicane — 125 m spacing
- Three volcano high-G vertical turns — elevation change + high G loading
- Water-slide low corridor — minimum-altitude surface run
