INVESTIGATION: BUFFETT VS. GATES

Buffett vs. Gates:
The $180 Billion Question
An updated, data-driven scrutiny of the world's two most consequential living philanthropists — as of mid-September 2026. The earlier comparison was wrong on both men. Here are the corrected numbers, the tax mechanics, and where the money actually went.

Two men. Two fortunes built in the same century. Two radically different exit strategies. Warren Buffett spent six decades compounding Berkshire Hathaway into a conglomerate and then handed the proceeds to his friend's foundation. Bill Gates built Microsoft, got called ruthless for it, and then — with Melinda French Gates — turned the resulting fortune into the most ambitious charitable institution in human history.
The problem with most comparisons is that they conflate gifts given with money distributed, mix joint and individual contributions, and count the same dollars twice across decades. What follows is the corrected record.
KEY CURRENT FIGURES
The Oracle of Omaha
Warren Buffett
Net worth: ≈ $145B
Global rank: ~#10
Lifetime giving: ≈ $72.6B
Of that, to Gates Fdn.: ≈ $48B
Giving ÷ net worth: ≈ 33.5%
Future plan: All BH stock → family fdn. by 2034
The Microsoft Founder
Bill Gates
Net worth: $105–115B
Global rank: mid-to-high teens
Lifetime to Gates Fdn.: ≈ $63.9B
Post-divorce transfers: $10.8–12.5B (Pivotal)
Giving ÷ net worth: 50%+ (methodology varies)
Future plan: Virtually all → fdn., closes 2045
Both men receive Forbes' top philanthropy score of 5 — the designation reserved for donors who have given away 20 percent or more of their wealth. That is where the similarities in the spreadsheet end.
CORRECTED COMPARISON (MID-2026)
Metric | Warren Buffett | Bill Gates
Current net worth | ≈ $145B | ≈ $108–115B (incl. joint historical w/ Melinda where relevant)
Lifetime giving (principal reported) | ≈ $72.6B | ≈ $60–64B+ to foundation, plus further to Melinda's vehicles
Giving ÷ current net worth | ≈ 33.5% | Higher — often 50%+ depending on inclusions
Primary vehicle so far | Gates Foundation (≈$48B) plus four family foundations | Gates Foundation (majority of gifts) plus post-divorce transfers
Future plan | All remaining Berkshire stock → family foundations by 2034 | Virtually all remaining wealth → foundation; closes 2045
Net-worth figures fluctuate daily with Berkshire and other holdings. "Giving" counts stock or cash value at time of transfer — not future appreciation the recipient may have earned. Methodologies differ slightly across Forbes, foundation filings, and Bloomberg.
SCRUTINY OF THE EARLIER CLAIMS
The prior statement that Buffett had given approximately $60–65 billion and Gates over $100 billion was inaccurate in both directions.
· Buffett's total is higher — approximately $72.6 billion per Forbes Philanthropy Score data as of early September 2026. That includes roughly $47.9–48+ billion to the Gates Foundation between 2006 and 2025, plus gifts to his four family foundations.
· Gates' direct personal contributions are lower than $100 billion — closer to the $60 billion range for the foundation itself. The foundation's total distributions exceed $110 billion because the endowment generates returns and has received Buffett's large external gifts on top of the Gates family's own.
· Buffett's cumulative ratio is lower — approximately 33 to 44 percent depending on the exact net-worth snapshot — primarily because his remaining Berkshire stake is still enormous and he has only recently accelerated the final distribution timeline. Gates has already transferred a larger share of the wealth he generated during his peak Microsoft years.
· The "44% vs. 93%" framing overstated the gap and used incomplete numbers. The real picture is closer to a 33 to 50 percent-plus range depending on precise inclusions — with both men operating at elite levels of giving.
“Absolute dollars still favor Buffett. Percentage-of-wealth metrics favor Gates. Neither man is losing.”
— Fiveo1 Data Desk
THE 2026 SHIFT: BUFFETT WALKS AWAY FROM THE GATES FOUNDATION
In July 2026, Buffett stopped his annual donations to the Gates Foundation — the first omission since 2006 — and redirected approximately $5.9 to $6 billion in Berkshire stock entirely to his four family foundations. He has accelerated plans to dispose of all remaining Berkshire shares — still worth well over $130 to $140 billion — to those family foundations by the end of 2034. He remains committed to giving away more than 99 percent of his wealth.
Gates, meanwhile, has committed virtually all of his remaining wealth and plans for the foundation to spend an additional approximately $200 billion before closing in 2045. The foundation has distributed more than $110 billion in charitable support since inception (through 2025) and holds an endowment of approximately $89 to $92 billion.
501(C)(3) CLASSIFICATION AND TAX DEDUCTIONS TAKEN
Both the Gates Foundation and the Buffett family foundations — the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, the Sherwood Foundation, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and the NoVo Foundation — are classified as 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations.
The Stock-Gift Advantage
Donations of long-term appreciated publicly traded stock (held more than one year) to these entities generally allow the donor to claim a charitable contribution deduction equal to the full fair market value of the shares on the date of transfer — without recognizing or paying capital gains tax on the unrealized appreciation.
For contributions of long-term capital gain property (Berkshire or Microsoft stock):
· To a public charity or private operating foundation: deduction generally limited to 30 percent of AGI, with a five-year carryforward for any excess.
· To a private non-operating foundation: limit generally 20 percent of AGI — still at fair market value for qualified publicly traded stock — with the same five-year carryforward.
· Cash contributions face higher limits (up to 60 percent of AGI in recent years for public charities).
· The donor avoids capital gains tax — federal long-term rate up to 20 percent plus the 3.8 percent net investment income tax, plus any state tax — that would have been due if the stock had been sold first.
· The receiving 501(c)(3) organization pays no tax on the receipt or subsequent sale of the shares.
Specific dollar amounts of tax savings realized by Buffett or Gates are not publicly itemized in available filings. The benefit scales with the fair market value of each annual stock gift and the donor's AGI and tax bracket in that year. Large gifts routinely generate multi-billion-dollar deduction amounts that are carried forward across years under the percentage-of-AGI limits.
VALUE GIVEN — AND WHAT HAS BEEN DONE WITH THE MONEY
Gates Foundation Side
The foundation receives both Gates family contributions (approximately $63.9 billion through 2025) and Buffett contributions (approximately $47.9 billion through 2025).
Gates Foundation — Distributions & Allocations
Total charitable distributions, inception–2025: $110.9B+
Total grant payments, inception–2025: ≈ $90B
2025 charitable support: $8.47B
2024 charitable support: $8.01B
Endowment, June 30 2026 (unaudited): ≈ $92B
Countries reached: 143
U.S. states + D.C. reached: 45 + D.C.
Primary uses of the money (approximate allocation emphasis):
· Global health and development — the majority of historical spending: infectious disease control and eradication (polio, malaria, tuberculosis, HIV), maternal newborn and child health and nutrition, vaccine development and immunization programs, global health agencies and funds.
· Agricultural development and nutrition in low- and middle-income countries.
· Gender equality initiatives.
· U.S. education programs — K-12 and postsecondary success.
· New — September 2026: at least $1 billion over the next two years for equitable artificial intelligence access, allocated roughly 40 percent education (including AI tutoring tools), 40 percent healthcare (diagnostics, clinical decision support, maternal care, drug and vaccine discovery), 10 percent agriculture (AI advice for smallholder farmers), and 10 percent digital foundation (language datasets and related infrastructure).
Buffett Family Foundations Side
These four foundations receive the balance of Buffett's lifetime giving beyond the Gates Foundation portion, plus the redirected approximately $5.9–6 billion in July 2026 and all future remaining Berkshire shares.
The Four Buffett Family Foundations
Foundation | Focus | Notable figures
Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation | Reproductive health & family planning; Nebraska college scholarships; U.S. higher-ed grants | ≈$1.46B grants (2025); ≈$909M (2024); net assets ≈$2.72B
Sherwood Foundation | Social justice, early childhood education, Nebraska / western Iowa community programs | $2B+ cumulative grants; historically 70%+ to Nebraska organizations
Howard G. Buffett Foundation | Global food security, agriculture, clean water, conflict mitigation, anti-poverty | Multi-billion lifetime grantmaking
NoVo Foundation | Alternative economic models, local agriculture, food co-ops, worker-owned businesses | Social-change initiatives
These four foundations have received tens of billions in total from Buffett over the years — the non-Gates portion of his approximately $72.6 billion lifetime total. They generally operate on a spend-as-you-go model rather than building large permanent endowments. With the July 2026 redirection of approximately $6 billion and the commitment to transfer all remaining Berkshire shares (still valued well over $130 billion) by the end of 2034, annual grantmaking capacity of these foundations is expected to rise sharply in the coming years.
BOTTOM LINE
Buffett remains the larger absolute giver to date and is accelerating the final phase of his philanthropy. Gates has moved a higher proportion of his personal fortune into charitable vehicles already and has structured the Gates Foundation for a massive final spend-down.
The earlier "Buffett 44 percent versus Gates 93 percent" framing overstated the gap and used incomplete numbers. The real picture is closer to the 33 to 50 percent-plus range depending on precise inclusions — with both men operating at elite levels of giving.
Absolute dollars still favor Buffett. Percentage-of-wealth metrics favor Gates more strongly at present. And by 2045, when the Gates Foundation closes its doors, the comparison may look entirely different again.
